Tigania West MP Kilemi Mwiria has said there is need to invest heavily on the technical, vocational and university education in Meru County so as to transform the region into an exporter of knowledge and skills.

Speaking at Thau Chiefs Camp in his Constituency, the assistant Minister for Higher Education noted that a technical Training institute is already under construction at Athwana in Tigania West while land has already been set aside for the construction of two universities in the district.

“We want to have technical institutions where our youth can acquire internationally accredited certificates. Meru County can become an exporter of skills to the rest of Kenya and other parts of the world. This will help eradicate joblessness among the young people,” Mwiria said.

He said that there is need to give priority to skills training and talent promotion for the youth who do not attain university entry grades so as to restore hope to those who have been termed failures after form four exams.

“There is need to have a talent centre where talents can be nurtured. Vocational and technical training institutions will empower those who do not access university education. There is high demand for technicians,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Mwiria lamented that the country is losing over Sh300 billion to corrupt deals every year and called on Kenyans to ensure corrupt individuals are left out of the next government.

The Assistant Minister cited the tremendous economic development in countries like China and Singapore which he attributed to the heavy punishment meted out on perpetrators of economic crimes.

“In Kenya, Corruption is still a big problem that must be fought with a passion. Countries like China and Singapore have developed very first because of not tolerating corruption. Their punishments include life imprisonment and death because economic crimes can result to loss of innocent lives,” he asserted.

The MP lamented that in Kenya; corrupt leaders are venerated and celebrated stagnating the development agenda.

He said that the Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 on leadership Integrity should be effected to assure Kenyans of good leadership.
